#7 teaching
I absolutely love going into my classroom and I look forward to it every single week. I feel as though I made a lot of progress not only in my teaching but in improving these students lives. I worked with my two students every week on Dolch words which are simple words that the student should know quickly just by looking at them. These students shouldn't need to sounds out these words. At first my students did not know any of the words. I worked with my students every week on these words and they were tested again last week on the words and knew almost all of them. The reading coach was very happy with the progress my studnets had made. I also worked with them on phonemic awareness. I feel as though they have majorly improved and I am so very proud of them. I have also worked with second grade and fifth grade and it is very interesting for me to see how the students are behaved differently. I do not know if the teacher maks the difference or if it is the age but I feel like the fifth graders were so respectful of their teachers while the younger grades were not. I think that I am not sure what grade I would like to teach if I decide to become a teacher. All grades have there ups and downs. I think that I have learned patience and respect for different cultures throughout this experience. I learned how to keep a students attention even when it was extremely difficult. I learned that yelling is not fun for any teacher but sometimes it is nessecary. I think that this experience has been great for me and I am sad that this semester is ending.

It sounds like you are having a great experience! I think the respect thing depends on the teacher, when they don't hold their ground they are seen as a push over and aren't respected. It doesn't mean you have to be super strict or yell at them but you need to set limits and stick to them. It's cool that you are working with the same group of kids week after week, I bet it's going to be sad to not see them anymore.
ReplyDeleteIt is true, teachers need to set their rules and stick to them. In that way, they can teach respect. When I went to my school, many times I saw how the math teacher yelled at her students, that was something that I did not like. However, I agree with you, sometimes teachers need to raise their voices.
ReplyDeleteThat i interesting you feel as though you are helping your students improve. Congrats!!!! I wish I felt the same. Sometimes with the games the reading coach has me do with them becomes so repetitive, they memorize not learn. So that is great that it works with some kids!! Hope it is not too sad when you leave.
ReplyDeleteGreat exchange, FYI, I am almost always sad at the end of every semester. Each class is a specific dynamics and is unique in this way. As an educator, I view it as a chapter of my life that cannot come back ewxactly in the same way. It's important to acknowledge your feelings whether frustration, sadness, and find "supporters" (colleagues you trust, mentors) to share them with!
ReplyDeleteI liked this post! It is so rewarding when your students are catching on to what you are teaching, and they enjoy seeing you each week. But I do have to agree with Stephanie and the games do become repetitive after a while and the students start to become bored with them becasue they have memorized what the game is.
